Cooroy’s Mill Place Project given the green light
YES! We’ve got it!
There were no jubilant celebrations, just a few smiles and handshakes in the corridor after a nine-to-four vote at a special meeting of council put the Mill Place Project back on track.
Councillors debated a motion put by councillor Lew Brennan to rescind a decision to call for expressions of interest in a bid to save project costs.
The $10 million Mill Place Project, including a new library, had been brought before council to debate a budget increase of $1 million.
After approval at committee stage, the move was blocked when put before full council, but at yesterday’s special meeting several councillors expressed a desire to see the project go ahead after more information was put on the table.
Division 12 councillor Lew Brennan rejected suggestions the project was facing cost blowouts before it began, instead he reminded councillors it had been under way for seven years.
“This is a major, major project and a contribution to the future of the region,†he said.
Lower Mill Board chairman Seb Vecchio said it was great news for Cooroy and surrounding areas.
“It’s been consulted to death,†he said.
“We just couldn’t see where cost saving would come from.
“We were confident with all the extra information on the table (the project would be approved).
“It’ll be a real kick in the pants for the community.â€
