New rules for domain names

A domain name is the word or name that companies or individuals register for their designated website addresses, for example niser.org.au.

On June 1 this year the Australian Domain Name Administrator (AUDA) introduced a new policy with important new key features on the transfer of domain names.

  • Domain name registrants cannot purchase domain names solely for sale to another party.
  • Domain name registrants must not transfer a domain name for a period of 6 months after registration.
  • After the 6 month period has expired, the domain name registrant may offer the domain name for sale via any means including advertising the domain name for sale either through the newspaper, domain name broker, eBay etc and directly contacting prospective purchasers.
  • A purchaser must comply with existing AUDA com.au 2LDownership eligibility and allocation rules.
  • All transfers will be completed by standard domain name transfer forms for which the registrar is permitted to charge a fee.
  • Parties to a domain name transfer will be asked to disclose the method of sale and price. Any disclosure will be voluntary and strictly confidential and to assist the AUDA with statistical data.

For business owners this means that the existing rules surrounding eligibility and allocation of domain name registration still apply after the policy was instigated.
